We feel blessed to have a vibrant community that believes in the power of prayer as a source of comfort, strength and healing. At every service, we take a moment to recite the names of individuals we are holding in our hearts for health and healing. Beginning January 1, 2023, all are welcome to add names to our Misheberach (Healing) Prayer List for 30 days. These names will be recited each morning during prayer regardless of their support's presence at services. At the end of 30 days, we request that names be renewed with our office receptionist, Fern Schorr (fschorr@aasynagogue.org; 404.355.5222). Without renewal, names will be removed from the list with our hope that our prayers were successful in sending strength and wholeness.

Do you know an AA congregant who is in the hospital or infirm? We are concerned about loved ones and friends who are in the hospital or infirm. Although our synagogue office remains closed, we are still working and would like to connect with you, especially in regards to pastoral care. If you have information about friends or family in the hospital or other care facilities, please contact Rabbi Rosenthal (lrosenthal@aasynagogue.org) directly. We always appreciate the opportunity to speak with anyone in need and offer support in any way we can.

The Pinch Hitter Program is back after a two-year hiatus due to Covid-19! The Pinch Hitter Program, which is organized by B'nai B'rith and chaired by Harry Lutz, provides volunteers to work in non-medical positions in area hospitals and assisted living places on Christmas Day to give employees the day off to spend with their families. Volunteers will work in (approximately) four-hour shifts at seven hospitals and assisted living facilities this year. All volunteers MUST be vaccinated. Wearing a mask is highly encouraged. To volunteer, sign up using the link below. Questions? Contact the chair: Harry Lutz (678.485.8179).

Through our membership with the ADL's (Anti-Defamation League) Kulanu Initiaitve, our AA family is creating an antisemitism task force to partner with other communities across the country to collectively fight hate and antisemitism. Membership on the task force will require a year's commitment and involve participation in ADL virtual meetings and community of practice working sessions. Our congregation will also offer special programs, initiatives, and action steps to raise awareness, call out local and national antisemitic incidents, and build relationships with communities susceptible to antisemitic infiltration. To learn more about or to join the task force, please contact Rabbi Rosenthal (lrosenthal@aasynagogue.org).

Ways You Can Help

Be in the Community:

  • Attend daily prayer services: As a synagogue community, prayer is one of the ways in which we connect with God and one another. Join us virtually or in person for daily morning and evening minyan services (view our website calendar for times and Zoom links).
  • Gather for Shabbat services: Every Friday evening and Saturday morning (view our website calendar for times and Zoom links).
  • Meet with the Rabbi: To schedule an appointment, please contact Jill Rosner (jrosner@aasynagogue.org; 404.603.5741).

Be Charitable:
Find a charity that offers support in a meaningful way to you and your family, and be generous. The Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta has started a campaign to support infrastructure rebuilding.

Reach Out to Local, State, and Federal Representatives:
Start emailing and writing to your elected officials, letting them know that we need them to stand with Israel and to be a courageous voice for us in the Halls of Government. Find your elected officials using this robust website.

Keep Up with What is Going On:
Stay informed by reading your preferred news, periodicals, or websites to keep up with what is happening and share this news with others.

Be in Touch with Your Israeli Friends and Family:
Our families and friends in Israel feel so alone. Make sure they hear from us. Send a text or an email. Ensure they know we stand with them and are working in the United States to send support.

How to Talk to Children

What to Say to Young Children:
Tell the truth, but keep it brief. You might say something like, "On Saturday, fighting started in Israel. There are a lot of people in Israel and in America who are working hard to end the fighting and keep everyone safe." Answer kids' questions honestly, but they don't need to know many details. Keep them away from news, social media, and podcasts that might scare them as much as possible. Assure them that they are safe.

What to Say to Elementary and Middle School Children:
Whether we tell them or not, our kids have likely picked up that something is going on. Ask your child what they know, and answer their specific questions with basic facts. Try to speak with nuance. Speak honestly about what is happening with your friends and family in Israel. Try to keep kids away from the news and social media. Encourage kids to come to you or other trusted adults with questions or for information.

Mental Health Support

If you or a loved one needs emotional support, JF&CS is available to help. Call 770.677.9399, text 678.460.9018, or email israelsupport@jfcsatl.org

Special Israel Healing and Protection Service

Special Israel Healing and Protection Service

By Rabbi Laurence Rosenthal

Dear Friends,

As Israel moves forward with its operation to end this devastating war, we are now getting a clearer picture of the pain, suffering, and devastation that has occurred so far. My heart is broken as I think about the people who were murdered, injured, and taken hostage. This time is filled with great anxiety, and keeping our minds from approaching the worst possible outcome is hard. We know that much suffering is still to come and will take a lifetime of healing.

In my letter to the congregation on Monday, I encouraged us to join for prayer online and in person (on the few days during the week that we open Ellman Chapel).

This Thursday, October 12, at 6:00 p.m., please join us in Ellman Chapel for a special Mincha/Ma'ariv Service, where we will offer special prayers of strength, healing, protection, and courage for the days ahead.

In addition, I received a meaningful suggestion that we open Ellman Chapel each morning and evening throughout this week (Wednesday Evening, October 11–Monday Morning, October 16) for anybody who would like to sit in our sacred Ellman Chapel prayer space with a few others as we join the online platform in prayer. This is a time when we feel so alone, and our heart cries out to our sisters and brothers in Aretz Israel. Being together might bring a bit of comfort and courage as we strengthen ourselves for the difficult road ahead. Anyone is welcome to join us during the following dates and times:

  • Wednesday, October 11, 6:00 p.m.: Evening Minyan
  • Thursday, October 12, 7:15 a.m.: Morning Minyan (with the Torah service)
  • Thursday, October 12, 6:00 p.m.: Special Israel Healing and Protection Service
  • Friday, October 13, 7:15 a.m.: Morning Minyan
  • Friday, October 13, 6:00 p.m.: Shabbat Evening Service,
  • Saturday, October 14, 9:30 a.m.: Shabbat Morning Service (with the Torah service)
  • Saturday, October 14, 6:00 p.m.: Mincha (with the Torah Service), Seudah Sheleshet, Ma'ariv, Havdallah
  • Sunday, October 15, 9:00 a.m.: Morning Minyan (Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan, with the Torah Service)
  • Sunday, October 15, 6:00 p.m.: Evening Minyan
  • Monday, October 16, 7:15 a.m.: Morning Minyan (Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan, with the Torah Service)

I will be there each morning and evening to warm the room, and I hope you will join me if that is meaningful.

If you can't come during minyan time but would like to sit in the Ellman Chapel during regular business hours to offer your own prayers, please call the office (404.355.5222) and let them know when you would like to come by. We welcome you with open arms.

Sending strength and comfort for the days ahead.

A Message on the Current Situation in Israel

A Message on the Current Situation in Israel

Dear Beloved Community,

As we emerge from the celebrations of Sukkot, Shemini Atzaret, and Simchat Torah, we are met by the horrors of what is taking place in Israel, our homeland under attack. Now we have one stance when it comes to Israel—we stand with it. Over this last year, there has been much that divides us, but right now, we stand united against terror and hate. We will emerge from this victorious, but it has already cost us so much—safety, security, wounds, hostages, death. We have an important role to play in this victory over terror, which we must act upon at this crucial time. Below are some critical steps each of us can take to help bring peace and security to Israel.

Join us at Tuesday's Israel Solidarity Rally: on October 10 at 7:15 p.m. at City Springs (1 Galambos Way, Sandy Springs, GA 30328)

Be charitable: Find a charity that offers support in a way that is meaningful to you and your family, and be generous. The Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta has started a campaign to support the rebuilding of infrastructure.

Join us for daily prayer: As a synagogue community, prayer is one of the ways in which we connect with God, and we can connect to one another through this important ritual. Join us for morning, evening, and Shabbat services to be in solidarity with our sacred community. We will recite the prayer for Israel in our morning and evening prayer service. Join us online or in person (in-person mornings: Sunday, Monday, and Thursday; in-person evenings: Thursday and Friday). Links to the virtual platform are available here.

Reach out to your local state, state, and federal representatives: Start emailing and writing to your elected officials, letting them know that we need them to Stand with Israel and to be a courageous voice for us in the Halls of Government. Find your elected officials using this robust website.

Keep up with what is going on: Stay informed by reading your preferred news, periodicals, or websites to keep up with what is happening and share this news with others.

Be in touch with your Israel friends and family: Our families and friends in Israel feel so alone. Make sure they hear from us. Send a text or an email. Make sure they know that we stand with them and are working here in the United States to send support.

This is an unprecedented time, and so much is at stake. But we will win this war and move Israel to a greater peace if we work together towards that sacred task. We must not fail… We will not fail. Let us do our part.

Sending peace, strength, and hope for the time ahead.

Help feed the women at Rebecca's Tent, a shelter for homeless women at Congregation Shearith Israel! There are 21 dates to fill during the months of December, January, and March. This year, we will be feeding 14 women. Meals do not have to be kosher (or even kosher-style), and the shelter welcomes restaurant meals or your home-cooked specialties.

If you're ready to choose your date(s) to volunteer, please fill out the online form (link below). After signing up, we will email you with confirmation of your submission. For more details or questions about volunteering, please contact Ann and Herb Alperin (alperin@mindspring.com; 404.231.2310).

Volunteering to provide dinner is a wonderful mitzvah. Scott Kaplan, who volunteers with his wife Shelley, said in his recent minyan shpiel, "The Torah and Jewish tradition are explicit in commanding that we feed the hungry. In Isaiah, God commands us to 'share our bread with the hungry …'"

Build your community. Strengthen your connections. Do Judaism your way. Get $180 to host an event at the place and with the people you choose. You select the date. You set the location. You invite the attendees. You plan the activity. Federation picks up the tab. If you've been looking for an excuse to get together with friends, family, or neighbors, look no further!

When you receive a $180 Gather Grant you can:

  • Host a Shabbat dinner or holiday celebration to meet your Jewish neighbors
  • Teach friends how to make a special recipe from your childhood
  • Plan a picnic with other families who have similar-aged kids
  • Arrange a fun night to reconnect with camp, Birthright, or school friends
  • Buy copies of a Jewish-themed book and host a discussion group
  • Organize a poker night, a nature hike, a volunteer project… whatever and wherever you want!

Any Jewish-identifying individual, couple, friend group, or family in greater Atlanta can apply to receive a $180 Gather Grant.

Ahavath Achim's Sisterhood is a dynamic organization of women of all ages with diverse experiences, talents, and interests within our synagogue, community, and the Jewish world. Every woman counts for Sisterhood to grow and thrive. Basic membership dues are $45, but we encourage you to join at a Chai-er level. Your generous dues and donations are vital for Sisterhood to continue to offer programs and projects that strengthen and sustain our Jewish values.

We need your involvement in AA's social action programs! Motivate your family and friends "into action" towards the betterment of our community, and envision our current programs continued for the future. Reach out to your nieces, nephews, friends, and new neighbors for new contacts and ideas to help us increase our pool of volunteers for our wonderful existing and future programs. We need you! Find out how you want to be involved by reviewing the list of social action programs in which our synagogue has been involved for many years. If you'd like to become involved, please email our Social Action Chair: Alan Wexler (alanwexler@databankinfo.com; 404.872.8880).
Are you a warm, friendly, dedicated volunteer who wants to make a difference in a fellow congregant's life through acts of loving kindness? Are you willing to make a personal call or visit to comfort and support a congregant who has lost a loved one or been ill? These caring touches – acts of loving kindness – make all the difference in the world to those receiving them. If you want to be a part of strengthening our community, then AA's new Chesed Initiative is for you! This committee will work with our clergy, staff, and lay leaders to connect members who need help with members who want to do good deeds! Additionally, if you know of a congregant who is facing personal difficulties related to health, loss, or grief, please contact Fern Schorr (fschorr@aasynagogue.org; 404.355.5222) to let us know. Help us reach out to members in need. We welcome your help and time with this important project.

For many years, Sisterhood has been an active supporter of Rebecca's Tent (a shelter for homeless women at Congregation Shearith Israel) by providing dinners during the winter months. Now, there is an opportunity outside the kitchen to support the shelter's success by attending their Annual Theater Event at Horizon Theater on Wednesday, August 23. Have a delightful evening that supports a wonderful cause!
