Tisha B'Av Commemoration

Finding hope in the hopeless moments… Join together for the solemn observance of Tisha B'Av (the 9th day of the month of Av) as we remember the destruction of the Temples in Jerusalem through the study of scripture, the chanting of Eicha (Book of Lamentations), and deep learning on the themes of the day.

      This study session will discuss how was it possible to find hope during the most unimaginable time of our history. We will look at writings from survivors and victims such as Eli Wiesel, Viktor Frankel, and Anne Frank.

    • When Bad Things Happen to Good People: Eicha, Job, and Finding Hope in Moments of Hopelessness

      We will discuss how people deal with loss and suffering, how to find hope in moments of great hopelessness, and finding a path through the pain in the context of the Book of Eicha and with reference to the Book of Job. This discussion will draw heavily upon Rabbi Harold Kushner's book, The Book of Job: When Bad Things Happened to a Good Person (2012). (Reading it in advance is not necessary for participants.)
