A Message on the Current Situation in Israel

Dear Beloved Community,

As we emerge from the celebrations of Sukkot, Shemini Atzaret, and Simchat Torah, we are met by the horrors of what is taking place in Israel, our homeland under attack. Now we have one stance when it comes to Israel—we stand with it. Over this last year, there has been much that divides us, but right now, we stand united against terror and hate. We will emerge from this victorious, but it has already cost us so much—safety, security, wounds, hostages, death. We have an important role to play in this victory over terror, which we must act upon at this crucial time. Below are some critical steps each of us can take to help bring peace and security to Israel.

Join us at Tuesday's Israel Solidarity Rally: on October 10 at 7:15 p.m. at City Springs (1 Galambos Way, Sandy Springs, GA 30328)

Be charitable: Find a charity that offers support in a way that is meaningful to you and your family, and be generous. The Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta has started a campaign to support the rebuilding of infrastructure.

Join us for daily prayer: As a synagogue community, prayer is one of the ways in which we connect with God, and we can connect to one another through this important ritual. Join us for morning, evening, and Shabbat services to be in solidarity with our sacred community. We will recite the prayer for Israel in our morning and evening prayer service. Join us online or in person (in-person mornings: Sunday, Monday, and Thursday; in-person evenings: Thursday and Friday). Links to the virtual platform are available here.

Reach out to your local state, state, and federal representatives: Start emailing and writing to your elected officials, letting them know that we need them to Stand with Israel and to be a courageous voice for us in the Halls of Government. Find your elected officials using this robust website.

Keep up with what is going on: Stay informed by reading your preferred news, periodicals, or websites to keep up with what is happening and share this news with others.

Be in touch with your Israel friends and family: Our families and friends in Israel feel so alone. Make sure they hear from us. Send a text or an email. Make sure they know that we stand with them and are working here in the United States to send support.

This is an unprecedented time, and so much is at stake. But we will win this war and move Israel to a greater peace if we work together towards that sacred task. We must not fail… We will not fail. Let us do our part.

Our tradition seeks to imbue the ethereal nature of our good and evil, right a wrong into an object that can be consumed, cast out, or flung away. Kapparot seeks to take that which is weighing us down and swing it over our heads, casting it far away from us. We have reclaimed this medieval ritual for our modern spiritual life, replacing the killing of a chicken with the righteous act of tzedakah. Join Rabbi Rosenthal in the garden as we recite our prayers, imbue a bag of money with our regrets for the past year, and swing it over our heads, thereby turning our shortcomings into acts of loving kindness to help others. Our High Holiday Mahzor is filled with references to books we should be sealed into: Life, Redemption, Sustenance, Merit, and Forgiveness (see Avinu Malkeinu). What are we really asking for when we pray to be sealed into these “books?” Does it imply that after Yom Kippur the fate of everyone is sealed for the rest of the year? 2:30–4:00 p.m.	Beit Midrash (Study Hall) Led by Dr. Dennis Gilbride “The Golden Calf, Consuming Fire, Atonement, and Forgiveness”: This session focuses on two relatively well known, but under-studied stories in the Torah: the Golden Calf and the death of Aaron’s sons, Nadav and Avihu.  By exploring midrashim and ideas that tie these two episodes together, we will provide an interesting and provocative understanding of the Jewish approach to atonement, forgiveness, and connection to G-d. Dennis Gilbride has been a professor for 32 years, first at Syracuse University and, for the last ten years, at Georgia State University in its Department of Counseling and Psychological Services.
