SUMMARY:🔀 Robert Ratonyi - Yizkor Featured Speaker
DESCRIPTION:Robert Ratonyi\nYizkor Featured Speaker\nApril 9 | 11:30 AM EDT \nJoining us during Yizkor service on the last day of Passover\, Robert Ratonyi\, author of From Darkness into Light: My Journey Through Nazism\, Fascism\, and Communism to Freedom\, will speak about his experiences before\, during\, and after the war as a child survivor of the Holocaust. \nJoin us during Yizkor service in Epstein Sanctuary or online. \n + Join Zoom\nRobert Ratonyi was born in Budapest in 1938\, the year of Kristallnacht\, when Nazi Germany annexed Austria into the Third Reich\, signaling Hitler's intention to start the Second World War in 1939. He survived the Holocaust\, despite both of his parents being deported\, his father in 1942 and his mother in 1944\, to different concentration camps. His mother survived and raised Robert during the Soviet communist dictatorship. He was a freshman at the Budapest University of Technology\, where he became involved in the bloody uprising against the regime in October 1956. After the Russians crushed the uprising\, he fled to Austria and emigrated to Canada in February 1957\, where he met his wife Eva\, also a Hungarian Holocaust survivor.  \nIn Montreal\, Canada\, Robert restarted his life\, learning English\, working during the day\, and continuing his studies in an evening engineering program at a local university. In 1961\, he transferred to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States\, where he received his bachelor's and master's degrees in engineering. He also received a Master of Science Degree in Management from Drexel University and embarked on a new career in business and finance.  \nRobert Ratonyi had a successful business career at several large companies\, such as General Electric\, Exxon\, Xerox \, and Contel. After a corporate career\, in 1986\, he and his wife started a mergers and acquisitions firm in Atlanta\, Georgia. After the fall of the "Iron Curtain"\, he also worked as an investment banker in Budapest for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in 1993 and 1994 to help the Hungarian government's privatization program.  \nAs a child Holocaust survivor\, he regularly speaks to Middle and High school students on behalf of the William Breman Jewish Heritage and Holocaust Museum and the Georgia Commission on the Holocaust. He has spoken at churches\, educational institutions\, and civic organizations throughout Georgia. He and his wife live in Atlanta and are avid supporters of the arts\, education\, local Jewish organizations\, and Israel.  \nIn 2020\, he published the memoirs of his early life in a book titled From Darkness into Light – My Journey Through Nazism\, Fascism\, and Communism to Freedom.

SUMMARY:Empowering The Aging Brain Program - Part 3 🔀
DESCRIPTION:Empowering the aging brain \nTHree-Part Series \nIn-Person: Ellman Chapel \nOnline: Zoom \n\nJoin Online\n \nThis series is designed for individuals and families interested in improving cognitive function\, optimizing brain health and taking informed proactive steps. \nDrawing on current neuroscience and clinical experience\, Dr. Dov Pine explains how brain networks change with age\, why some changes are reversible or modifiable\, and evidence-based strategies for cultivating brain-body adaptability and resilience. Each session will conclude with a Q&A discussion. \nDr. Pine is a chiropractor and integrative healthcare provider who focuses on age-related cognitive change and dementia\, with particular emphasis on modifiable risk factors and rehabilitation strategies. He is the Founder and Clinical Director of the Empowered Brain Program\, a multidisciplinary center dedicated to cognitive decline and dementia rehabilitation\, and also directs a physical-based Cognitive Decline Rehabilitation Program in Newcastle\, New South Wales\, Australia. \n \nThe three sessions are outlined below: \nSession 1: The Aging Brain – What's Normal and What's Not\nAs we age\, changes in memory\, attention\, and thinking are common—but not all cognitive change is "just aging." This talk explains how the brain normally changes over time\, what should not be considered normal\, and why many early warning signs are often missed or dismissed. Attendees will gain a clearer understanding of healthy brain aging\, early red flags\, and why early\, informed action matters when supporting and rehabilitating cognitive function. \nSession 2: Understanding Cognitive Decline and Dementia: Risk Factors and Opportunities for Change\nCognitive decline and dementia do not begin suddenly—they develop over years through a combination of health\, lifestyle\, and neurological factors. This talk outlines key predictors and risk factors\, including cardiovascular health\, blood sugar regulation\, sleep\, stress\, nutrition\, and other modifiable influences. The focus is on where meaningful opportunities for change still exist and how supporting brain network function can influence cognitive trajectory over time. \nSession 3: Home Strategies for Improving Cognitive Function and Reducing Dementia Risk\nSmall\, consistent actions at home can make a meaningful difference for individuals experiencing cognitive decline or living with dementia. This session focuses on simple\, evidence-informed strategies to optimize cognitive performance\, support brain resilience\, reduce stress\, and improve day-to-day functioning. The emphasis is on practical interventions that integrate into everyday life\, strengthen confidence and connections\, and help people remain actively engaged for as long as possible. \nWe hope these programs will provide useful information and stimulate thoughtful discussion about healthy aging. \nPlease note:  Information regarding this series is being provided for informational and educational purposes to our community. This series  is not promoted or funded by the Synagogue. The Synagogue does not endorse or recommend any individual practitioner's clinical or medical services\, and does not offer professional advice\, diagnosis or treatment. Participation should not be understood as a professional referral and participants should consult a qualified medical provider regarding medical or health questions.
