SUMMARY:Empowering The Aging Brain Program - Part 3 🔀
DESCRIPTION:Empowering the aging brain \nTHree-Part Series \nIn-Person: Ellman Chapel \nOnline: Zoom \n\nJoin Online\n \nThis series is designed for individuals and families interested in improving cognitive function\, optimizing brain health and taking informed proactive steps. \nDrawing on current neuroscience and clinical experience\, Dr. Dov Pine explains how brain networks change with age\, why some changes are reversible or modifiable\, and evidence-based strategies for cultivating brain-body adaptability and resilience. Each session will conclude with a Q&A discussion. \nDr. Pine is a chiropractor and integrative healthcare provider who focuses on age-related cognitive change and dementia\, with particular emphasis on modifiable risk factors and rehabilitation strategies. He is the Founder and Clinical Director of the Empowered Brain Program\, a multidisciplinary center dedicated to cognitive decline and dementia rehabilitation\, and also directs a physical-based Cognitive Decline Rehabilitation Program in Newcastle\, New South Wales\, Australia. \n \nThe three sessions are outlined below: \nSession 1: The Aging Brain – What's Normal and What's Not\nAs we age\, changes in memory\, attention\, and thinking are common—but not all cognitive change is "just aging." This talk explains how the brain normally changes over time\, what should not be considered normal\, and why many early warning signs are often missed or dismissed. Attendees will gain a clearer understanding of healthy brain aging\, early red flags\, and why early\, informed action matters when supporting and rehabilitating cognitive function. \nSession 2: Understanding Cognitive Decline and Dementia: Risk Factors and Opportunities for Change\nCognitive decline and dementia do not begin suddenly—they develop over years through a combination of health\, lifestyle\, and neurological factors. This talk outlines key predictors and risk factors\, including cardiovascular health\, blood sugar regulation\, sleep\, stress\, nutrition\, and other modifiable influences. The focus is on where meaningful opportunities for change still exist and how supporting brain network function can influence cognitive trajectory over time. \nSession 3: Home Strategies for Improving Cognitive Function and Reducing Dementia Risk\nSmall\, consistent actions at home can make a meaningful difference for individuals experiencing cognitive decline or living with dementia. This session focuses on simple\, evidence-informed strategies to optimize cognitive performance\, support brain resilience\, reduce stress\, and improve day-to-day functioning. The emphasis is on practical interventions that integrate into everyday life\, strengthen confidence and connections\, and help people remain actively engaged for as long as possible. \nWe hope these programs will provide useful information and stimulate thoughtful discussion about healthy aging. \nPlease note:  Information regarding this series is being provided for informational and educational purposes to our community. This series  is not promoted or funded by the Synagogue. The Synagogue does not endorse or recommend any individual practitioner's clinical or medical services\, and does not offer professional advice\, diagnosis or treatment. SUMMARY:Scholar-in-Residence with Rabbi David Goodman ⏺️
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of learning\, connection\, and reminiscence as we welcome Rabbi David Goodman\, grandson of the beloved Rabbi Arnold Goodman (z"l)\, who served as Rabbi of Ahavath Achim Synagogue from 1982–2002. Together\, we'll honor his legacy through reflection\, connection\, and inspired learning. \nThe evening's topic of discussion will be Resilience and Renewal: Rabbi Akiva's Legacy After Tragedy. After the tragic loss of 24\,000 students\, Rabbi Akiva faced a crossroads. Together\, we'll explore how this ancient story continues to offer profound guidance on perseverance\, purpose\, and the enduring power of renewal. \nRabbi David Goodman serves as rabbi of Moreshet Avraham\, a vibrant Masorti community in Jerusalem\, where he shares the pulpit with his wife and partner\, Rabbi Amirit Rosen. A passionate educator and thinker\, he is currently pursuing advanced research in Jewish Philosophy at Haifa University\, focusing on the evolution of religious thought in the 21st century. In addition to his rabbinic leadership\, Rabbi Goodman is deeply engaged in cultural and interfaith initiatives that foster dialogue\, understanding\, and mutual respect across communities. He proudly serves on the board of Rabbis for Human Rights and brings his love of teaching—and learning—to diverse settings throughout Israel and beyond. \nThe event is free to attend\, but registration is required by Thursday\, May 22. The location of the event is at a private residence—The address will be sent upon registration. \nQuestions? Contact Rabbi Laurence Rosenthal (lrosenthal@aasynagogue.org; 404.603.5744). \n Register

SUMMARY:Israel and Antisemitism: Facts\, Lies\, and Myths in the Media ⏺️
DESCRIPTION:You+2 and AA's Response to Antisemitism and Hate Committee welcome you\, extended family\, and friends of all faiths who stand with the Jewish people and Israel to join us for a panel discussion on antisemitism\, Israel\, and media coverage. The program will feature a conversation with three panelists\, including Anat Sultan-Dadon (Consul General of Israel)\, Dov Wilker (Regional Director\, American Jewish Committee)\, and Josh Levs (Award-Winning Broadcast Journalist\, Fact-Checker\, and Host of They Stand Corrected Podcast)\, moderated by Lisa Cohen (Journalist and Media Consultant). \nThis event is free\, but registration is required (form linked below). \nQuestions? Contact youplustwoevents@gmail.com or Nancy Levine (nlevine2660@gmail.com). \n Register\nEvent Co-Chairs: Margie Eden\, Brandon Goldberg\, and Annice Parker\nHost Committee: Allison Feldman\, Jody and Ramon Franco\, Rita and Arthur Bodner\, Linda and Richard Bressler\, Margo and Larry Gold\, Eve Goldstein\, Valerie Habif\, Gail and Lyons Heyman\, Vicki and Steve Morris\, Marcia Spielberger\, Sue Winner\, Rina Wolfe\, and Jill Vantosh \n— \n\nYou+2 was created by a group of Jewish women who came together in solidarity after the horrific events in Israel on October 7\, 2023. There was a commonality that they were all unexpectedly experiencing… They were all receiving messages from friends who were not Jewish asking: "How are you doing? How can we support you\, Israel\, and the Jewish people? How can we learn more about what is going on in Israel?" From these genuine concerns and real-time questions\, You+2 was born. You+2 will educate and bridge an understanding to promote dialogue about Jewish/Israel's history\, the Israel-Hamas war\, and local and worldwide antisemitism amongst people of all faiths. You+2 began with the idea of "You Bring Two Friends" of a different faith to the first event\, and since then\, You+2 has been blessed to evolve into something more far-reaching and encompassing throughout the Atlanta area. \nAA's Response to Antisemitism and Hate Committee is working to increase awareness and understanding of antisemitism among our synagogue community as well as partners from other faith communities through education\, advocacy\, and programming. We strive to educate everyone about the federal and state laws that prohibit antisemitism as well as how to identify and report antisemitic activities that threaten the safety and security of our students and community. We work with faith leaders and diverse communities to increase their awareness of antisemitism and to help fight against antisemitic rhetoric and actions. This will be accomplished through engaging and educational programming including speakers\, panels\, online resources\, and more.

SUMMARY:Rabbi Rosenthal's Talmud Class 🔀
DESCRIPTION:Join Rabbi Rosenthal every Wednesday for an exploration into the minds of our rabbis to better understand our modern Jewish world and the innovative process of Rabbinic Judaism. This year we will be studying Tractate Megillah\, Chapter 1 "Megillah Nikret\," understanding the days that different Jewish communities and townships can read the Biblical Book of Esther in celebration of the Purim Holiday. As always\, this study will take us far beyond the holiday of Purim giving us an insight into the lives Jews lived in the past and a better idea of the spiritual life we live today. No experience of Talmud study is needed. We will work in English translation and the conversation will flow from our hearts and minds. \nAlthough an online text will be shared\, Rabbi Rosenthal encourages all students to purchase their own copy of Tractate Megillah. He recommends the Koren Steinsaltz edition. \n Join Via Zoom
