Michal Sella and Mohammad Darawshe\, Givat Haviva's Executive Director and Director of Strategy\, will discuss their experiences and work at Givat Haviva since the horrific attack of October 7 and the ensuing Israel-Hamas War. Hear how they've been working to address fear and uncertainty between Jews and Arabs in Israel\, particularly working in the field of education and providing training to teachers and facilitators. Givat Haviva's green campus also served as a safe space for evacuated families from the south where they received care\, enrichment activities\, and counseling. \nGivat Haviva is an Israeli civil society organization. They strive to create a model for Jewish and Arab shared society\, anchored in principles of mutual respect\, trust\, pluralism\, and intrinsic equality between citizens. Their activity focuses on the fields of education\, language instruction\, culture\, and art. The Jewish-Arab partnership within the organization is the foundation of Givat Haviva's unique expertise and a central value underlying their worldview and practice. \nSPEAKERS: \nMichal Sella is the Executive Director of Givat Haviva—the Center for Shared Society\, and an expert in Israeli politics and public policy. She has extensive experience working with governmental bodies both in Israel and abroad\, working as the Director of the Center for Policy Change at Shatil – New Israel Fund\, a parliamentary advisor at the Knesset; a journalist and co-editor at Channel 2; a co-founder of The Whistle (the Israeli fact-checking NGO) and a pedagogical coordinator at Hashomer Hatzair youth movement. She holds a master's degree from Oxford University in public policy\, as well as bachelor's degrees from Tel Aviv University in history and journalism. She lives in Tel Aviv with her partner and two kids. \nMohammad Darawshe is the Director of Strategy of Givat Haviva—the Center for Shared Society. He holds a masters' degree in Peace and Conflict Management from Haifa University\, and is a Robert Bosch Academy Fellow and faculty member at the Hartman Institute. He previously worked as co-director of The Abraham Initiatives\, elections campaign manager at the Democratic Arab Party and United Arab List\, and was a leadership fellow at the New Israel Fund. He is a member of the executive board of Darkenu\, Pnima\, and Aaron Economics Center and was previously an elected council member of his hometown Iksal. Darawshe has presented lectures at the European parliament\, NATO Defense College\, the World Economic Forum\, Club de Madrid\, US Congress\, and Israel's Presidential Conference. He is a recipient of the Peacemakers Award from the Catholic Theological Union and the Peace and Security Award of the World Association of NGOs. SUMMARY:One Year Commemoration of the October 7 Massacre in Israel ⏺️
DESCRIPTION:On October 7\, 2023\, Israel endured the deadliest attack on Jewish people in a single day since the Holocaust. On Simchat Torah\, a celebratory holiday of our Jewish heritage and pride\, Hamas terrorists breached the southern Gaza border and took 1\,200 innocent lives. There are still more than 100 hostages still in Gaza from more than eight different nations\, showing that this is not just a Jewish or Israeli issue. It is an issue of humanity. And we must stand together to find comfort\, support\, and healing. \nIsrael remains a focal point in our work and community efforts. In light of recent events and the ongoing captivity of hostages\, we are committed to supporting those affected alongside our overseas partners. As we continue these vital efforts\, we must look forward and consider how we\, as a community\, will come together to mark the tragic events of October 7. Remembering is a fundamental aspect of Jewish tradition\, and we must honor those who lost their lives while remaining vigilant in safeguarding our freedom to practice our faith. \nThe Israeli government established an annual national day of remembrance on the Hebrew date of the 24th of Tishrei. For the first anniversary of this tragedy\, an additional ceremony will be held on the Gregorian date of October 7. Here in Atlanta\, the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta is organizing two significant community events to observe these dates: the Gregorian anniversary on October 7 and the Hebrew anniversary on October 27. DESCRIPTION:*The Peachtree Creek Reverse Tashlich cleanup has been rescheduled to Sunday\, October 6! We will still be cleaning the Peachtree Creek Greenway\, where the creek was badly battered by the flooding water brought on by Hurricane Helene. The waters brought a lot of debris\, which we hope to remove\, preventing it from flowing south into the Chattahoochee River (and eventually the ocean). Please register for the new date using the link below.\n \n— \nJoin AA's Greening Group for Reverse Tashlich! The ritual of Tashlich requires us to symbolically cast our sins into a body of moving water; Reverse Tashlich asks us to remove human-made trash from our rivers and streams\, much of which ultimately flows into our oceans. This year\, like last year\, we will clean the Peachtree Creek Greenway\, a beautiful walking/running path just a few miles east of AA. \nPlease arrive at the parking lot by 1:45 p.m. to register. All are welcome to stay on dry ground\, but if you plan on getting down and dirty\, be sure to wear boots. Please bring your own reusable water bottle. DESCRIPTION:AA's Interfaith Inclusion Committee invites you to the Honeymoon Reset & Refresh Series! The series is all about providing couples a welcoming Jewish space for self-discovery\, rejuvenation\, and community building. This five-session program uses Shabbat as a compass to explore Jewish life\, deepen relationships\, and make meaningful connections with other couples through engaging conversation\, delicious meals\, and experiential learning. This series will be led by HMI Rabbi Elizabeth Breit in partnership the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta's Interfaith Connector. \nThis program will take place as a five-part series: \n\nTuesday\, May 21\, 6:30–8:30 p.m.\nTuesday\, May 28\, 6:30–8:30 p.m.\nTuesday\, June 4\, 6:30–8:30 p.m.\nFriday\, June 14: Shabbat dinner at private home in Sandy Springs (details to follow)\nSaturday\, June 29: Havdallah (end of Shabbat) event (details to follow)\n\nThe cost to register is $72 per couple. DESCRIPTION:Please join the Consulate General of Israel to the Southeast for a community Yom HaZikaron ceremony honoring Israel's fallen soldiers and victims of terror. Our personal and collective pain is far greater following the murderous terror attack of October 7\, 2023\, and the many lives lost in the war since then.\n \nIf you have lost a loved one in the past or more recently in the war against Hamas\, either as a fallen soldier or victim of terror\, fill out this form with your loved one's name\, and it will be included in the slideshow which will be shown during the commemoration. \nPlease wear a white shirt to honor the fallen. Security check-in begins at 5:00 p.m. Please arrive early to allow sufficient time for security screening. SUMMARY:Yom HaShoah 59th Community-Wide Holocaust Commemoration ⏺️
DESCRIPTION:Join us rain or shine at the Memorial to the Six Million at Greenwood Cemetery as we remember the six million Jews murdered in the Holocaust and the heroism of survivors and rescuers. The featured speaker is Holocaust survivor from Poland\, George Rishfeld. As a child Holocaust survivor from Warsaw\, Poland\, George's life took a miraculous turn as an infant when he was thrown over the barbed-wire fence of the Vilna Ghetto. Halinka\, the daughter of a man employed by George's father\, caught him in her arms\, setting the stage for a remarkable story of survival. Braving the dangers of war\, Halinka and her family concealed George\, treating them as their own child. This courageous act included venturing into the community and attending church\, all while risking their lives to protect him throughout the war. \nThis event is free and open to the public and is jointly sponsored by Eternal Life-Hemshech\, the William Breman Jewish Heritage Museum\, and the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta. \nIn honor of Yom HaShoah\, admission to the Breman Museum's Holocaust exhibition will be free to the public on Sunday\, May 5\, 11:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. \nDirections to Greenwood Cemetery: 1173 Cascade Circle SW/Atlanta\, GA 30311. SUMMARY:Atlanta Interfaith Hunger Seder ⏺️
DESCRIPTION:Come to the 14th Annual Atlanta Interfaith Hunger Seder! Presented by the Atlanta Jewish Community Relations Council\, the event will again bring together many esteemed area clergy and community members of all faiths during this holy season and contemplative time of year. A festive and bountiful vegetarian meal will be interwoven with a modified Passover seder teeming with compelling information about the prevalence of food insecurity both nationally and in our midst. We will learn about local organizations that are rising to meet this challenge\, from grassroots food pantries to public policy and advocacy and the many ways we can all activate and engage in these efforts. \nThis year\, Rabbi Jason Holtz of Temple Kehillat Chaim will lead the seder alongside the Venerable Carole Maddux\, who is returning to help guide the program. Many local clergy and luminaries will also offer inspiration and participate in the individual table discussions. \nAnd our children will lead the way. After stealing the show in 2023\, Interfaith Atlanta Youth (IAY)\, under the skilled guidance of Dr. Chris RayAlexander and Rev. Cassandra A. Henderson (Interfaith Children's Movement)\, will meet for a three-part session and dialogue just before the program. During the seder they will then present Four New Questions about ways their various faith traditions inform and compel them to action around alleviating food insecurity. There is still time for additional area high schoolers and youth groups to participate in this meaningful program. \nWhile many existing partners and organizations are returning\, a variety of new allies are joining in support of this year's event.
